Surveillance
The surveillance trap was a design intervention that we used to get a better understanding of how people react under restricted options. Our space had two areas where people typically linger. At one area we placed a mock surveillance camera and at the other we put caution tape on the bench. Our intention was to observe the change in people's behavior due to this dichotomy of limitations.
From our observations we noticed that people avoided the bench with caution tape over the surveillance camera. We attribute this behavior to idea that people avoid immediate harm over delayed harm. Additionally, people felt more compelled to interact with the camera in a show of defiance, such as taping a piece of paper over the lens.
