SPACE BLOCKS | PEOPLE KNOWING
project brief: create a design research project

Space Blocks is a design research project investigating how families construct space. Each family received 2 kits containing blocks, a sharpie, and a large sheet of paper. Throughout the 5 days, 2 family members were asked to respond to a new question using the blocks in the kit. On the large piece of paper, there were 5 squares representing 5 days of the week.
Each day, they were instructed to peel off that days cover sheet to follow the directions listed underneath. In addition to the Blocks, the families were also given a photographers kit containing a disposable camera. With the given camera, the photographer’s role was to document each family member’s Space Block Sheet after they were finished with the Day’s activity.

The abstract nature of space blocks allows open-ended results for interpretation.
Within these results, the most reoccurring patterns show how significant private space is an individual. Since gaining physical access to this private space can be difficult for some, how does one find the time or the resources to obtain this space?
And as designers, how can we create this space for a person?
